First off thanks to all for the input regarding my Windows XP shutdown problem. (see previous post)..all is well thanks to you guys.

Any way the next thing is...ANTIVIRUS/FIREWALL software

I'm currently running PC Cillin 2007 security Suite (- its fine really but i notice that it seems to be a bit heavy on the CPU usage (always running in the background at app 45%) The 2006 version was OK but this latest version seems a bit cumbersome.

Im considering changing to Kaspersky Antivirus c7.0 combined with the freeware Zone alarm firewall. I'm not running through a router (yet).

I'm just interested in your comments / advice for these 'security' issues.

I know there are freeware antivirus progs out there but are they really any good? I had AGV on a previous PC a few years ago but it still managed to get infected.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Cheers Wink

We had a discussion about that here. Somewhere...
Anyway, Antivir Personal is good and free. So is Avast.
For firewalls Jetico Personal Firewall and Comodo are both good and free.

I was using AVG Home Edition and thought it was a good program because it was recomended by quite a few people, however at the end of last year I was getting messages on my PC saying that the AVG Home Edition was being stopped and after 15/1/07 it would be no more and would I like to buy the new AVG etc.

Anyway after a bit of research I had Avast recomended to me which is free Wink so I got that installed. After the first full scan it picked up about 5 viruses which it recomended I locked in the Avast virus chest Huh? the point being that AVG never picked these viruses up.

I still use Avast and it seems to be serving me OK up to now but I'm no expert on these things. It constantly updates the software on a daily basis, but every year you have to apparently re register with them, in order to get a code so you can keep getting the up dates.

It recently picked up a worm virus which affected me when I read the MWP instructions on converting Audio torrents.

Here's the link if your interested    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

AVG is still free, all that message was about was that you had to upgrade to the newer version as they were not supporting the older version anymore.

Oh! I see, I didn't realise that Embarrassed

Well I suppose all's well that ends well, and Avast does seem to be a better Anti virus program? but like I said previously I'm no expert. However, since I've got it, I have noticed more and more people on the web saying Avast is great Antivirus program, and recomending it to others.

The message AVG put up was badly worded, it caught a lot of people out.

You can test you firewall here :
http://www.zebulon.fr/outils/scanports/quick_scan.php
In French but results are easy to understand.

You need this result :
Félicitation ! Votre sécurité semble optimale !
La totalité des ports TCP testés sont masqués, votre ordinateur ne donne donc aucune réponse aux tests de ports effectués. Votre machine est donc invisible aux yeux de pirates potentiels.

If that's the same McAfee Antivirus / firewall program you can get through / via AOL ? then I tried that as well, and it brought my PC to a virtual standstill Sad slow wasn't the word for it, my PC felt like it was wading through glue.

Did you suffer a similar effect Paplo or did you find McAfee OK?

Edit... @ blackbeard. What's Zone Alarm?

Edit... @ blackbeard. What's Zone Alarm?

My girlfriend had McAfee with her Dell she bought about two years ago, so as she is allowed to use it on up to three machines, she let me install it. On my Acer it was ok, but did seem to lag a little. When that died, I put it on my old one and it killed it, I couldn't do anything, so had to uninstall it. On my new Dell, it hasn't seemed to have been a problem, but this has got a nippy new AMD core duo processor, so it shouldn't affect it. However today, I will be going back to Zone alarm/AVG so I might see a difference.

I will post my findings.  Cool Cool Cool
