For the past few days, AVG8 has been bugging me for a restart. After restarting, it immediate bugs me for another. Manual update, restart and it wants to restart once again. Rinse and repeat. Ugh!

Today I researched the issue and it appears to be one many people face. I tried all the recommened tricks, but no love. I finally rsolved the issue by uninstalling AVG and reinstalling. Interestingly enough, although I have my system set to update daily, I was using an old build of the software. Huh?

Bottom line: if this problem starts happening to you, you may want to save yourself the trouble and just reinstall. Wink

Oh! If you use AVG, you may want to check out your version. Open the Control Center and choose Help > About AVG. As of today, October 6, the most current version is 8.0.173.

I have had a few update failures since it went to Version 8, there is something really wrong with this build I think. Never had trouble like this with previous versions and I have been using AVG for about five years now.

Oh man, I got rid of AvG as soon as it changed to version 8. Terrible stuff.

I've dumped this appalling piece of crap altogether.
7.5 worked flawlessly for me - sure, there were some false positives that got annoying but better that than a false negative.
Version 8 is a resource hog of the worst kind.
It also causes restart issues where if it *thinks* there is an issue at root level or system level, it will shut the system down & reboot it. Had this happen whilst MPEG-2 encoding, and also whilst capturing HDV footage.

Uninstalled, ran Crap Cleaner - no more problems ever since.
I do not know what AVG have done, but this is such a hound it deserves to be left in it's kennel.

Hmmm... Now that is some food for thought! lol I have to agree, some of the "features" of version 8 are a PITA.

So Pred... What are you running these days? Huh?

I'm also one of the happy users of this software.
Never had a problem with it. Figure that..

This stuff.

I have no problems with it and it supposedly has quite a bit higher virus detection rate than AvG.

I've also dumped Zone Alarm Free since the free version got very bad. Right now I'm on Online Armor and I'm happy with it.

The only concern I have for that software is that it doesn't appear to include e-mail scanning in the free product. Good knows I get more than enough crap coming through e-mail these days and it is nice that AVG "vaults" it for me. Note to all: don't use a real e-mail address on your public PK server! lol

I too got rid of the ZA crapplication. I am using Comodo and it seems to be working well enough for me. Smiley

Yeah, Comodo is good too.

As for e-mail scanning Avast does it. And Comodo antivirus, as far as I know.
Antivir may not have this feature, but it scans any file on access/execution, so it should eliminate most threats anyway, I suppose.
