A while back my dad transferred a lot of our old VHS  tapes to DVD by linking his DVD recorder to the video. Unfortunately he didn't bother to check them before he got rid of the tapes!  I've just discovered some of them aren't playing  Cry My first thought was that he hadn't finalised them so I checked but they have. Some are not playing at all - and some on the PC only. I'm not exactly sure what he's done and he can't tell me!

Anyway, the one that matters the most to me is a disc full of film of all my beloved and now departed pets. It plays on the PC but not on the DVD player. When I look at the files it looks like normal VIDEO_TS files but all the DVD players are just spitting it back out!

Can anyone help???  The stuff on this disc is precious to me!!

Have you tried copy the DVD to the hard drive?
If you can rip it, burn the video_ts folder to a new disc

If you can copy it there must be something you can do, maybe re-encode or fix the structure,
Hopefully a video-editing expert  will help you more.

The ones which play on the PC can be rescued. The others, maybe if they can be read at all from the PC?

I seem to recall that you are equipped with DVD Author 3? If so, fire it up and select the source wizard. Import DVD-Video, and select the VIDEO_TS folder. Try it first without a menu, let the software weave its magic and build a nice new file structure for you to burn Smiley

If this fails we will move on to the next step, a little bit of demuxing jiggery pokery.

Good advice, folks.

There is also a little guide here in the forum for correcting DVD's using ifoedit. If the re-author doesn't work, we can dig this up and see what happens. Smiley

Thanks to all your advice I have now recovered most of the footage!  Many thanks!  Cheesy

However, I now have a new problem! The last disc!  When I tried it in the DVD recorder that was used to record it it played - but on nothing else. I checked to see if it had been finalised but it appeared not to have been so I thought that must be the problem so I tried to finalise it but it wouldn't. It let me select the finalise option and looked like it was starting the process but then after a while just came up 'failed'. However it was still playing on that DVD player. I just tried to watch it and now the DVD player that it was playing on before is coming up 'no disc'

HELP!!!  It there ANYTHING I can do or have I lost it now for good?  I will be so ipset if I have as once again, this has precious family and pets footage on it of family / pets that are now gone  Cry
