My daughter has got an ipod nanno with video capability ( I'm STILL! chugging along with my old ipod photo!  Sad  ) and I haven't a clue how you get a DVD onto it?or if indeed you can actually put DVD's onto these video ipods, Nanno or Classic.

Does anyone know if you can? and if so how do you do it?  Smiley

Yes, you can get DVDs onto any iPod that'll play video. Couple of things to note;

- I haven't found a way of keeping the existing DVD chapters during conversion to .mp4 video. That means that if you want to have a movie or a concert or somesuch you get one long .mp4 file. It's ok for 20 - 30 min sitcoms.

- the conversion process is a bit time consuming, but once done you can back the created .mp4 files to a DVD+/-R and then take the videos on and off the iPod as required (I've seen that the new Nanos now come in a 16GB version - the DVD conversion process I use creates a file of about 100MB for a half hour TV show.

Have a look at this guide - you'll need to have Microsoft's .NET 2 installed first;

http://howto.diveintomark.org/ipod-dvd-ripping-guide/

I don't do it quite the way the guide describes. If, for example, I want to make .mp4 files of, say, Seinfeld episodes, I firstly rip the whole DVD (usually 6 episodes) to HD with DVD Decrypter. I then use TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 to separate each episode into its own folder which I've created on the HD. And then I use Handbrake to encode them for my iPod. Handbrake can do a batch encode so it's just a matter of loading the 6 or so files one at a time into Handbrake and letting it do it's stuff.

Thanks Freestate  Smiley I didnt' realise that it would be so complicated with regards to the conversion process. I'm pretty sure my brother used to have a video capable Creative Zen player a while back that could record directly from the TV / DVD player I will have to ask him. I do know that Archos have had that capability for years on their products, I wonder why Apple haven't seen fit to give this function to their ipods? which surely would make ipods more versatile / better for technophobes.

Anyway I digess  Smiley thanks for the link and I will have a go / experiment. I'll get back  to MWP if I get stuck  Wink

Thanks Freestate, that will probably come in handy. I spotted a new 160GB Classic in a store on Christmas Eve and thought that it shopuld come home with me as I have not seen a new 160 in ages Cheesy

Brace yourself for loads of techy questions like "How on earth do I turn the bugger off?"

How about: Throw it to the wall with a lot of force.

OK, Stefan, done that.

Next question, how do I turn the bugger back on?

You'd think this stuff would be in the manual but you can't imagine how long it took to work out the volume control.

Doesn't it turn on/off using the play button?

Yes - just hold the play/pause button down. Alternatively leave it alone and it'll turn itself off after about 5 minutes. But, of course, it's never really 'off' - it sleeps, and its natural state is 'resume' if you stopped using it in the midst of an album or playlist.

Grab the 160GB while you can. They don't make them anymore! It used to be you could get an 80GB or 160GB Classic, now they only make 120GB Classics.

It's entirely possible that the way I do it is more complicated than need be. I've just got used to doing it that way. DVD Fab Platinum appears to have a feature that will encode directly from a DVD disc to iPod-ready video, but I've never tried it. I guess my reticence goes back to the old days when one never did anything with audio or video 'on the fly'. That said, ripping CDs to .m4a using iTunes is 'on the fly' so I guess I'm catching myself out and talking bollox.  Embarrassed

Why did they do that I wonder? Huh? apart from the fact that the new 120 GB has that Genius capability ( wow! ) and it straddles the two old models on price thus making it more affordable to some I guess,  it does seem a bit of a retrograde step. I mean if one is going to have lots of video content on their pod as well as music then the 160 GB is surely better value even if it was more expensive.

That's a good question. Apple haven't provided an answer, but I would suggest they need us to keep buying a new iPod every year. I think the Genius function in iTunes is a wank and I have no interest in my iPod deciding playlists for me  Tongue

As for video, when I first got my 160GB Classic and was learning how to make it I discovered that every episode of 'Friends' - 220 or so 22 minute episodes - only took up about 20GB.

indeed, I've yet to establish just what is the point in 'Genius' in iTunes, there again I did turn it off almost instantly after it appeared!

Me too!!  lol

It kept wanting to connect to iTunes online and 'recommending' that I buy certain tracks that it thought would go with what I was listening to at the time. Buy stuff from iTunes - don't think so  Tongue   Cool

every now and then I do actually buy summat from iTunes, but only when a band I love does the dirty on me and releases a track/tracks as an iTunes-exclusive, and it reaaaaaaaaally pisses me off that they couldn't be bothered to create some proper artwork and put it on something tangible for me

It's the future 117  Tongue

 Wink lol

I can't see the point of Genius either  Huh? I mean if it's a straight choice between the 120GB with Genius and the 160 GB version, then the latter wins for me everytime even if it was more expensive.

Having said all that! even the 120GB would do me if only I could afford one at the moment  Sad
