Hi all, This is mainly aimed at UK members. My ISP is currently BT and I have noticed my upload and download speeds are severely restricted from 7-12pm during the week and most of the day at weekends. Apparently although I pay for unlimited usage, using P2P sites such as MWP class you as a heavy user and your connection is restricted to the point it virtually stops! I am therefore thinking of switching my ISP, and am wondering if anybody has experienced similar problems and can reccomend another provider. I am thinking of trying Virgin, but I can't find anything on their "heavy user" policy and I don't want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire. Thanks for any advice you can offer, Pissed off from England

Dear Piss off from England My BB supplier is BT too and I have noticed the the past month that my connection speed has dropped from 3.4 MBps to 1.3 MBps. I am restricting my use for a few month to see if the normal poor speeds are increased. Yours truly Brassed off up north

Dear Pissed off and Brassed off, You may find that you are no better off jumping ship in favour of Virgin. I dropped off their top tier service to save 20 quid each month and now have to cap my uploads between 4pm and 9pm to a measly 15kbps. I don't download enough to concern me but in the same timescale I would need to restrict downloads to about 50kbps (although I have not done the proper download sums). You need to find the BT terms of service which define you as heavy users and then do the sums to make sure that you can maximise your entitlements. Yours, Pissed up in the East Midlands

I've been taking a peak at the BT ToS and I'll be buggered if I can find where they actually define what they consider to be a heavy user on option 3 tariffs?
I must say that I feel it would be tricky to stick to the rules if the buggers don't let you know what the rules actually are. I wonder if BT are in cahoots with our blemish free government?

I couldn't find any exact figures, all I found was that if you use P2P sites we are going to restrict you. I don't know how my BT service compares to others but even when everything is going at its best (after 12pm) I can get 300-350kb/s download (absolute max I've ever had 520kb/s) and a measly 45kb/s upload!

And here in Oz my max is 150 down and 25 up with a 21GB download allowance, 14 off-peak (midnight to midday) and 7 peak (midday to midnight). Thankfully upload isn't counted towards usage. I wish I could feel sorry for you Englishers

...and down here in the South of Oz I recently upgraded to a business connection through internode. I have a 25Gb download limit on ADSL2 (of which I have 81Mb left for this month (3.3 days to go ) For the last 2 weeks I have had torrents turned off, because I find that even just uploading causes a significant download leak (about 300Mb per 8 hours). I've done the research on download and upload speeds, and I've been getting about 1Mb per second as a maximum, and I think about 200Mb per second upload, but I'm not sure this is maximum. Once I run out of allowance, I'll be cut down to 128kps speed, and after a further 3Gb, speeds will reduce further - to what, I don't know Needless to say, as soon as I run out of speed, I'm going to open uploads to see how their speeds are affected. Oh... and needless to say... I had to sacrifice my first born for the connection, but my Techno-guy said it was necessary to have a static IP.

Heard a story on NPR news this morning about a new law (or proposed law?) in France that would ban you from the internet altogether if they determine you are "pirating" music.

I'm in the UK on O2 (well, when I say 'I', I actually mean my Mum as I've moved back in to her place for a bit ), on the cheapest package, it's currently described as 'unlimited' (although I'm sure it wasn't when she signed up for it, but as I didn't live here then a limit wouldn't have been a problem), and I have to say I'm impressed. I've probably downloaded about 15GB/month (although I haven't factored in my PS3 online usage and my brother's near-constant Xbox 360 online usage ) for the last three months and noticed no kind of throttling, a speedtest at any time of day shows around 4Mb/s download and 1Mb/s upload

Oh... and needless to say... I had to sacrifice my first born for the connection, but my Techno-guy said it was necessary to have a static IP. OK, slightly off-topic (well, not really, considering the topic ) I opened up uTorrent with about 26Mb left on my allowance, and the stats update seemed a little slow initially.. I think I'd downloaded about 1Gb, and the latest stats update still showed about 5Mb allowance left. Overnight, of course, I exceeded my allowance, and I'm now getting about 10-12kps down, while upload is still travelling at about 90-100kps. It's looking somewhat nice to think that I might be able to rescue my Dime ratio of .31 (over about 500Gb download). I am thinking that when the month turns over, I'll download one or two DVDs from Dime (depending on what's available), and then just keep them open for uploading, for as long as they stay active. Then I can just leave my download speed available for later in the month. Well, that's the plan...

Update: Maximum upload seems to be about 100kps... Over a full 24 hours, I uploaded about 7.5Gb (I think), so assuming continuous full upload speed, I think it will only take me about 2 months to get my Dime ratio back to 1.
