Ive got  aproblem with ITunes and was wondering if anyone could help me out

I had ITunes program running on my Windows XP PC with the actual 'ITunes music folder' (which contains all of my Itunes music files), being on an external hard drive. Everything was working fine.

However Ive recently bought a new Windows Vista laptop and have just gotten round to installing Itunes on that. Once downloaded, and installed, I thought I would just have to redirect the program to the same Itunes music folder on my external hard drive (as i had done with the PC, when I originally moved the Itunes music folder to the external drive).

But it appears its not that staright forward. When I open the newly installed and 're-driected' Itunes it doesnt see any music files. I even copied the ITunes folder back to the appropraite location in the music folder within vista but still no files are found when i fire up ITunes. Ive done a wee bit of reserch into this on the web and think it may be something to do with the fact that, my external drive was designated E: on my old PC, but it is now drive F: on my new laptop ('drive E' is taken by the CD/DVD drive).

Apparently, its something to do with the ITunes library file not being able find the music files due to it thinking that the files are on drive E. instead of F.

Im stuck as to what to do next. Is there an easy way out of this? Or is it a complete re-insatall of all music files. any advice regarding this would be appreciated.

Cheers

An interesting problem but should be easily fixed. However, I'm unfamiliar with Vista so this would be the fix for XP, though I can't imagine Vista could be too different.

These things we know;
- you're iTunes library exists.
- iTunes is installed correctly on the new laptop.

1. Boot up Vista and then make sure your external harddrive is turned on
2. Make sure your external harddrive is showing up in Windows Explorer
3. Open iTunes, choose Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced tab (this is where your iTunes Music folder location will show)

4. click the 'change' button - this will open a 'Browse For Folder' window

5. Browse to your external harrdrive letter and click on the iTunes folder where your library is. The image in the browser window should then show an open folder - mine is sitting on Partition E: and is just called 'iTunes'.

I'm pretty sure that's how easy it should be.

The other option you have is to change the drive letter of the CD/DVD Drive to something else, so that the external drive can use 'E', to do this in Vista:

  • Open the Start menu (click the Windows logo button)
  • Right-click 'Computer'
  • Click 'Manage'
  • In the left-hand pane of the window that opens click 'Storage - Disk Management'
  • Right-click the CD/DVD drive in the bottom-left pane
  • Click 'Change drive letter and paths'
  • Select a new drive letter from the drop-down box
  • Keep clicking the OKs and Yes buttons to save

Thanks for the replies guys.

I had originally done what freestate advised - that was when i found out that Itunes wasn't seeing the files.

Ive now renamed the drives as 117 recommended, but still no go.

Could it now be something to do with the library files?  As it was a fresh install of the Itunes program on the laptop, I'm thinking that there would be no data regarding the actual tunes, playlists etc in the newly installed library files. Note - these are in the default location, just as they were on the old PC).

I may try hooking up the old machine and retrieving the old library files from there and copying them to the default location (overwriting the 'new versions) on the laptop. Ill let you know how it goes.  But please keep any suggestions coming.

Thanks again.

OK I managed to copy the library (and other)files from the old PC and pasted them into the default location on the new laptop. And............IT WORKED !!!!!   Grin

ITunes is up and running again !

Thanks for the help(especially about renaming the drives, Id thought about that but didn't know how to go about it in Vista - I think Ill have to get some more info on tips and tricks for this OS. Some things are hidden away in different places and how you access them is different from XP. Ill get there, but by then Windows 7 will be out -Oh well!

Anyway thanks again for your help. Wink
