great topic, thx Predator  Smiley

KMPlayer

KMPlayer

The KMPlayer is a versatile media player which can cover various types of container format such as VCD, DVD, AVI, MKV, Ogg Theora, OGM, 3GP, MPEG-1/2/4, WMV, RealMedia, and QuickTime among others. It handles a wide range of subtitles and allows you to capture audio, video, and screenshots in many ways.

The player provides both internal and external filters with a fully controlled environment in terms of connections to other splitters, decoders, audio/video transform filters and renderers without grappling with the DirectShow merit system. Internal filters are not registered to user's system to keep it from being messed up with system filters.

The KMPlayer includes almost all the essential decoders required for media playback. Furthermore, to get beyond the limitation of internal decoders, the external ones such as commercial h.264 decoders or cyberlink/intervideo audio decoders can be specified, so that KMP works optimally by the users' own customization. Even though the KMP is based upon directshow structure, it supports Winamp, Realmedia and Quicktime by the internal logic. Thus, it is possible to specify where to try to connect firstly the media in preferences.

In short, the player provides a strong hybrid structure efficient for interconnecting various directshow filters, winamp input&dsp plugin, and internal filters. The most outstanding feature is that the player has the full control of filter connections to prevent a media playback from being messed.

The player can set multifarious audio and video effects, slow down or increase playback speed with regular tone, select parts of a video as favorites, do an exceptionally powerful A-B repeat, remap the keys of remote interface for HTPC including overlay screen controls, change a skin dynamically depending on a media type playing, and many more. It is completely customizable thanks to a wide selection of skins and color schemes, and the configuration options are extremely extensive.

It has a great forum and the guys/gals really are worried to help...if you want to laugh, check my typo  Embarrassed at Feature Requests, (I asked help to play shn btw).

Is spectacular to listen to boots, why? use Cristality, and add some more treble, if you want it, and the sound gets absolutely clear and shine. The last audiences of TM sound incredible.

Also, the Normalizer, several times the sound on boots and specially  in DVDs are quite low, and this help you to get a "normal" level.

Additions / Alternatives to what's already been posted:

Antivirus

NOD32 - not free but regarded as one of, if not the best personal AV solution - it's fingerprint is very small (compared to the likes of McAfee, Norton etc), and it regularly has the highest and fastest detection rate

Archiver

WinRar - not necessarily as good as, but I prefer the UI over 7-zip's

Music Player

Winamp - version 5 is a vast improvement on version 3 (there was no version 4), and  with the ClearOne skin it looks awesome

Video Player

VLC - it'll play any video format you care to throw at it, unlike most any other player

Audio CD Burning

DeepBurner - Free and really simple to use

CD & DVD COVERS MAKING PROGRAM
http://www.undercoverxp.tk/
Free. Very simple to use. Even prints the cutlines, which are very handy when you have cover artwork that contains a lot of white in them.

A few favourites...

Firewall
Kerio/Sunbelt Personal Firewall
(Free.) I have kept using the old Kerio free, even though it was discontinued some time ago - I have a hardware firewall as well, but appreciated Kerio because its small footprint compared to other firewall, and the fact that it has good application behaviour control options. Controlling outgoing connections is, of course, the prime reason why I run a software firewall in addition to the hardware one. Now the free firewall has been revived as Sunbelt took over Kerio. Same deal - the full version for 30 days after downloading, and the limited but quite adequate free version after that, unless you pay up.

Tagging and renaming music files
Tag & Rename
I know there are others, but this is the one for me. The GUI may look a bit daunting at first, but it is really easy to use, making retagging/renaming a quick process once you know your preferences and how to do it. It's advertized as an mp3 tag editor, but the fact is that it will work with practically all kinds of music files.

Splitting cue files
CUE Splitter
Freeware. You know, those album ripped to one large file... if they are lossless and you decompress to wave, EAC can help you, but I do think that this app is easier to use, and it will work straight from FLAC or APE (or lossy formats), too. It leaves the original file untouched, so you can split the file for your own use but still keep seeding a one-track torrent after using this, with no need to make an extra copy.

Converting, and perhaps even ripping, audio
dBpoweramp
The Swiss knife of conversion - this one can convert from almost any audio file format to almost any other (there are plenty of extra downloadable codecs). I use it a lot for (I hope you sit down!) conversion from FLAC to mp3 (V0). NOOOOO, I don't share FLAC downloads in lossy format - but I do like to convert them for my personal use, taking a select number of tracks with me for listening on train and bus, etc... One thing I especially appreciate with dBpoweramp is the batch mode - load a number of albums in the converter and let it work over night. I hear its reputation as a ripping tool is increasing, too (the latest Refernce version), but I'll admit I stick with EAC.

Visual text file comparison and merging
WinMerge
Open source, free. The homepage says that it is "an Open Source visual text file differencing and merging tool for Win32 platforms. It is highly useful for determing what has changed between project versions, and then merging changes between versions." I say it's a life-saver! Smiley

Hey, thanks for that link, I'll be needing something like that soon. Smiley

As for dBpoweramp - thanks for bringing it up, I used to have an older version of that program long time ago, seems it has improved a lot since then.
I'll check it out for sure.

oooh I forgot to mention my choice for that category:

Mp3tag - like the one xuncat mentioned it does the tags of more than just MP3s (AAC, APE, FLAC, OGG plus plenty others), and it's real easy to use  Smiley

OK, it's time to ask you guys for a piece of advice - what torrent program (for Windows) would you recommend?

Don't be surprised - yes, this is the first time I'm going to install a torrent program, I never felt a need for one in the past but I think it's about time for me to join this torrent madness that's going on on this site. Grin lol
