Just got a new laptop  Grin after my P.C. buggered up big time  Sad and I'm wondering which free programs in the opinion of MWP members are the best at the moment to install onto it in order for it to be fully protected? ie, antivirus, spyware, firewall etc.

cheers!

Recommendations in the Software Recommendations thread are still valid.

Personally I'd recommend:

Antivir by Avira or Avast by Alvil for antivirus, Online Armor or Comodo for firewall,  SuperAntiSpyware and SpyBot (or Adaware2008) for antispyware.

Right now I have Avast, Online Armor,  SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot with its TeaTimer installed. I'm very satisfied with their performance.

For ease I'm using Comodo Internet Security now, AV & Firewall in one app, seems to work well without using much in the way of resources.  And Spybot - Search & Destroy for the anti-spyware  Smiley

Can you tell me if the Tea Timer slows down your machine at startup? Mine appears to be a system hog for a good while after booting up the 'puter. Eventually though thing go back to normal.  Undecided

Yeah I like the combined Comodo suite much better, it doesn't seem to ask me things as much as the firewall on its' own did, which I used to find annoying when it was just for mundane things, although I think part of the problem as for some reason it wouldn't remember my previous answers, so maybe the initial instal hadn't worked right. Nevertheless the combined firewall and A/V has been on my laptop for weeks now and I am finding it one of the most pleasurable programs I have ever used.

Thanks Smiley

Spybot seems to be the way to go for spyware it would seem, as for AV & firewall I quite fancy the Comodo 2 in 1 internet security package that 117 mentions. ( anything that makes things easy is ok by me  Wink )

I confess that I have actually already installed Avast anti virus on my laptop  because I have it on my P.C  ( which I have now got fixed on the cheap incidentally - the motherboard was knackered  Sad Roll Eyes  ) where it has performed ok as far as I know. The problem I have with Avast on my lap top, is that I'm not sure how I actually register it? the Avast on my P.C. needed re registered with the yearly keycode which I did ok, but since my lap top doesn't have any AOL software on it ( I don't really want to put any on it ) and I connect my laptop to the net using the internet explorer which my lap top came with, it can't receive emails, so I can't get a key code sent to it, the code that was sent for the Avast on my P.C. comes up as invalid when entered into the Avast on my lap top? therefore after the 60 day trial or whatever it is I'm not sure if the Avast on my lap top will keep on protecting it? ( unless it comes under the Avast registration on my P.C. when  my laptop connects to my modem? I have been told that you can use Avast Home on more than one computer by Avast themselves, but they have failed to reply to my registration problem in any follow up email to date?  )

Can you run two Anti virus programs on a laptop? eg Avast & the Comodo package or would I have to remove the Avast before the Comodo would work?

Two antivirus real time monitors running at the same time may cause problems. I wouldn't recommend it.

As for avast - you can always read your e-mail with the code on another computer and then enter the code in Avast manually. But if have to do it just go for Antivir.

When I re registered my Avast on my P.C. which I have just done a few days go because it needed re registered the first time I switched my P.C. on after getting it fixed ( it was out of action for a while ) I copied the code from my email that was sent to my P.C. and entered it manually into the Avast on my Laptop, but it just came up as an invalid code?

It might be an idea just to remove Avast from my laptop altogether and install the comodo 2 in one package that 117 and Pablo recommends, especially if as you say it might lead to problems having two anti virus programes installed.
