Thanks 117, looking into those suggested... Also using this site as reference as my office tech swears by their upgraded firmwares:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php

I too use WAP and MAC filtering and I haven't a problem with being hacked. I too have a neighbor with an unsecured router, and from time to time, I barrow a little extra bandwidth. Wink

Related - I just ran across this page at random:

converting a regular old $60 router into a powerful, highly configurable $600 router

Instructions and links to resources for flashing the router with linux-based software, by which you can vastly increase the strength of your router signal.  And you get some other cool features.

There is a link there to a list of routers that are good candidates for this.

Having just found it, it will be a while before I can test-drive it myself.  But for anyone who wants to read up on it .... make sure to read through the comments.  Many tech-savvy visitors to lifehacker.com are always adding in extra info & critical resource links.

Cool. They are using the same site as I linked above. It is nice having more 411 on this. Cheesy

I here that the newest firmwares support QOS and that will allow you to set packet priority. Then you can build into your router the ability to lower priority on Torrent packets and not have to worry about the 80% overhead rule. Grin

Hi --

Sorry to drop out.  Busy weekend, and the week is already on fire ...

Your comment on custom traffic config for torrents (etc.) ... yah.  That link I posted above specifically has numerous references to traffic-shaping options.  You can optimize for torrents, games, skype, etc ...

I got a bit excited when I read it & hope to get back to it as a 'summer project.'

Any commentary &/or experiences anyone wishes to post here, I'll be hopping back to use this topic as a resource in the future.

It's one of these days that my wireless disconnects every time one of the trackers isn't responding (or some crappy thing like that) Undecided  Cry

Been a bad day for that around here today, ems. I also understand Dime was acting up a bit. Undecided

Yeah, I am really interested in finding the time to look at a new router and the above firmware. One of my developers uses it and loves it. I am not sure he has any experience with the traffic shaping tho. Will need to take him out for sushi and find out! Wink

The funny thing is, that the problem is not my router, but my built in wireless  Sad

So... If a torrent has a problem with a site, it causes your wireless to go down? Huh?

I have recently had problems where torrenting on two machines caused my modem (with built in firewall and router) to reboot. But I believe that was due to connecitons and not timeouts reaching a tracker. Lips Sealed

As far as i know (and already experienced) it happens to my wireless if a tracker doesn't respond properly. I downloaded a torrent recently that included an additional tracker url that fooked up my wireless and it was all fine since i replaced that torrent. But today, apparently a tracker is down or whatever.
Last year, when an anti-piracy team "pulled the plugs" of some trackers it caused problems to a lot of people for a complete weekend Undecided I wondered why my wireless hung all day, whenever i opened Azureus and asked someone who told me about it  Glare

I can tell you, we experienced a small disruption today and Dime has been on and offline as well. So there have certainly been opportunity for the wireless to hang.

Do you know if this only happens with Azurues or if other clients are susceptible? Huh?

As for the upgraded equipment... Thumbs Up

That reminds me... I need to go shopping for a new external HD for here at work. Ran out of space on it last Friday. Cry
