.

As per my post on DVD burner, there is an opportunity to buy & bring in equipment from the U.S. this week.

My friend is a musician of more than 25 years.  He owns his own business for publishing & licensing music in Latvia & the EU.

We would like to buy a fairly top-end recording device to tape live shows.

Usually they will be in small venue's, such as clubs of 100 people or so.  Sometimes larger events.  Occasionally they will be outdoor events.

There will be opportunities to set up and record from the audience, and there will be opportunities to patch into the soundboard, so it should be able to do both.

The device should be able to record up to four hours at a shot, preferably with memory cards (?) that can be swapped quickly between songs.  Recommendations for better option?

Even better if it can be patched into a laptop and have the recording go direct to hard drive, especially using a firewire or perhaps even an eSATA connection (something standard).  This is not necessary, but could be an excellent bonus.  We will have opportunities to do this on occasion.  That will be another topic I'll start during the summer.

Of course, we would like the best sound possible so that we can make wonderful torrents and retain some as part of a catalog for publication.

Our budget is approximately $1000 US dollars, as the best item we can get this week over the internet.

Microphones do not have to be top gear included with the device.  We have options to upgrade to extremely serious ones later this year, so we only need what will get us by as we go through the learning curve over the next several months ... and they would be very useful as back-up options in the future or transplanted to another recording device.

Recording directly to digital memory cards is very acceptable & desirable .. but we will listen to all commentary and advice in this regards.

Time-limited opportunity: order should be placed by the close of business this friday to make shipping deadlines next week.

Thank you !!!

I'd quite like one of those myself, Zippy. Your link shows the Edirol as a discontinued product? Has it been upgraded? You can still get one from Keene Electronics ...

http://www.keene.co.uk/electronics/words.php?mycode=edirol&type=all

I believe that Downunder2 uses this particular rig?

However, from your initial comments it is obvious that stealthiness is not an issue so although it would stretch the budget a little, something like this Marantz would be cool. I've never owned or used one but have heard some pretty nice recordings made with just such a rig.

In my opinion it will be the microphones which will make the biggest difference to your non-soundboard recordings so I would certainly be looking into microphone options before forking out on the recorder itself.

By far the best place that I have come across for advice of this nature has been the Tapers Section.

Happy Taping!

I'm taking a look through the links & forwarding to more knowledgeable sound guys.  Will be looking in more detail.  Please keep links coming in!

EDIROL looks really nice!

But,  20 Hz to 40 KHz freq response seems slightly weak.  Would'a thought  10 Hz to 60 KHz might be a bit more pro ... although I agree most ears (including mine) would miss most of that extra range.

Just for fun .. listing some key features that caught my n00b eye & wondering which are really important and what I'm missing.

Portable & discreet:

http://www.solidstatesound.co.uk/edirolr-09HR.htm
Edirol R-09HR / £259

 - electrolytic capacitors;stable, reliable power
 - independent power source for the analogue circuitry
 - another power source for the digital circuit board

 - up to 24bit/96kHz linear PCM recording
 - 20 Hz to 40 KHz freq response
 - dedicated analogue input control
 - low-cut filter
 - limiter/AGC (Auto Gain Control)
 - gain boost
 - 1/8" stereo mic input

 - included wireless remote controller

 - USB 2.0, mini-B connector
 - SDHC memory cards, up to 8 GB (220 minutes at max. quality)
 - 2 x AA bateries

Portable & less discreet:

http://www.solidstatesound.co.uk/edirol_r44.htm
EDIROL R-44 / £499

 - 4 channels of uncompressed audio
 - selectable bit depths (16-bit or 24-bit)
 - sampling frequencies, 44.1kHz/48kHz/88.2kHz/96kHz (4-channel)
 - 192 kHz (2 channel)
 - SD or large capacity SDHC card (up to 8 GB)

 - 24-bit / 192 kHz : 115 minutes per 8GB SDHC
 - 20 Hz to 40 KHz freq response

 - built-in high quality microphones and speakers

 - combo input jacks (4) connect XLR and 1/4 inch plugs

 - capture eight channels by linking two units
 - Control Sync terminal: synchronized operation of two R-44 units

 - 3 types of power supply:
 - AC adaptor
 - external battery
 - 4 x AA batteries - 4 hrs w/ NiMH or alkaline batteries
 - USB 2.0 standard direct to notebook

 - "requires" Win2K/XP/Vista or Mac OS 10.2

Looks REALLY sweet  Drool, but way out of price range:

http://www.solidstatesound.co.uk/edirol_r4_pro.htm
EDIROL R-4 Pro / £1289  Tongue

The R-44 pretty much tops it out for what we can consider.  If we can swing this somehow, the R-44 is an example of what we had in mind.  We already have one portable device available similar to the R-09HR, so something more substantial was the thinking.  We will be having direct and intimate access to most of the shows we're planning to target.

More than anything else, just wanted to say Thanks!  and show I am looking from the hints provided.  As I said, time-limited and trying to get a dozen other things done instantly, so don't be offended if I can't look at / comment on all ...

http://www.brilliant-electronics.com/voice_recorders_marantz_pmd671.htm
Marantz PMD671

 -  24-bit, 96 kHz PCM capable  [ looks weak after 192 KHz 2-channel! ]
 -  Built-in USB 2.0 port
 -  uncompressed 16 and 24 bit PCM .wav files at 44.1, 48, 88.2 or 96 kHz

 -  Uses inexpensive, widely available Compact Flash media (CF)

[ NOTE :  Actually, these are not any much better than SDHC cards, and are more expensive by quite a margin ]

 -  A 1 GB CF card can hold almost 30 minutes of uncompressed stereo (24 bit, 96 kHz)

Not very impressive ...

 - Optional RC600 wired remote control
 - 4 to 6 hour battery life with standard AA alkaline batteries
 - Two built-in condenser mics for easy, true stereo recordings
 - Two XLR mic connections with +48v phantom power
 - RCA line I/O

Gonna go with the R-44 at this point.
